The AI Job Market in India in 2026: What the Data Actually Shows

What is actually growing, and what is not

The single clearest number in the data is also the one most likely to be misread. AI and machine learning roles grew 25% year on year on Naukri in June 2026, and that is real. What it is not is a general IT hiring boom. In the same month, IT and software services hiring fell 3% year on year, and mid-career hiring at four to seven years of experience was the weakest band at just 2% growth, against 12% growth at 13 to 15 years. The honest read is a narrow, fast-growing band of AI-specific demand sitting inside a broader sector that is flat or contracting elsewhere.

The occupation-level data backs this up. When Indeed’s analysts broke down which job categories actually mention AI in their postings, data and analytics topped the list at 38.6% of postings, ahead of software development at 22.8% and insurance at 18.2%. Healthcare and retail were not broken out separately, which is itself a gap worth naming rather than filling with a guess.

The skills that actually show up in the data

LinkedIn’s Skills on the Rise 2026 report for India ranks growth in skill acquisition, not raw demand, and the ranking is instructive: querying sits at number one among fastest-growing engineering skills, with LLMOps at four, workflow automation at five and AutoML at nine. LinkedIn does not publish a growth percentage behind these ranks, only the order, so treat it as a signal of direction rather than a number to quote.

Two skills that appear on almost every generic “top AI skills” list turned out to have no usable India-specific data at all when we checked: Power BI demand (job-board listing counts exist, but they are undated snapshots that include duplicates, not a demand index) and Deep Learning as a category distinct from wider machine learning, which no major source tracks separately. We would rather say that plainly than invent a number to fill the gap, and the full skills breakdown lists every gap we found alongside the figures that are real.

What the pay data really says, and the one role nobody can price

Two different, equally legitimate measurements exist for most roles, and they are not interchangeable. PayScale reports average total compensation, self-reported by employees. Indeed reports average base salary, derived from job postings. For a Data Scientist, PayScale’s figure across all experience is ₹10.18 lakh; Indeed’s is ₹11.98 lakh. Neither is wrong. They measure different things, which is exactly why a single quoted number for “the” data scientist salary is usually the wrong way to read this kind of data.

The role with the most striking gap in the data is not a data role at all. Prompt Engineer is the fastest-growing job title in India on LinkedIn’s 2026 list, yet the only India-specific salary figure we could locate for it came from a sample of just 11 people, far too small to publish with any confidence. We think that gap is interesting enough to deserve its own piece: Prompt Engineer is India’s fastest-growing job title, and nobody can price it yet.

Where the jobs are, and where the data runs out

Geography concentrates hard. Bengaluru holds 25.4% of India’s active AI job postings, Delhi NCR 24.8% and Mumbai 19.2%, together about 70% of the national total, based on CBRE’s analysis of Naukri listings as of December 2025. Hyderabad (12.5%), Pune (9.6%), Chennai (6.4%) and Kolkata (2.1%) make up most of the rest. Nagpur, Indore and Ahmedabad do not appear in this data at all, which tells you their share is small, not that it is zero.

We looked specifically for Nagpur, since that is where Fireblaze AI School actually operates, and we are not going to pad a real gap with an invented number. There is no published AI or data-science hiring figure for Nagpur from any source we could find. What is verifiable: TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Hexaware, GlobalLogic and several other IT and ITES companies have units operational in the MIHAN Special Economic Zone, per the Government of India’s own operational-units register, and Nagpur’s overall hiring growth ran between minus 2% and plus 11% year on year across the months of 2026 we checked on Naukri’s index, broadly in line with the national picture rather than ahead of it. The Maharashtra AI and GCC policy released in 2025 explicitly names Nagpur as a target city for future capacity, which is a stated intention, not a measured outcome, and we have labelled it that way. What we chose not to publish

Building the underlying index meant rejecting more claims than we kept. A widely repeated figure that 51% of AI and machine learning roles in India go unfilled traces back to a 2022 baseline, and the 2024 report it is usually attributed to states no gap percentage at all. A claim that India will cross one million AI job openings by 2026 has no traceable primary source and conflicts with a better-sourced projection of 1.25 million AI professionals by 2027. We are naming these not to score a point, but because a page that only shows the flattering numbers it can find is not really an index, and the discipline of saying “we could not verify this” is what makes the numbers we do publish worth trusting.

The bottom line

The data supports a narrower, more specific story than “AI is booming in India,” and the narrower story is more useful. Demand is real but concentrated: in a handful of roles, three metro regions, and a data-and-analytics function that already accounts for the largest share of AI-tagged postings. Pay data is real but comes in two incompatible measurements that should not be blended. And the fastest-growing job title of them all does not have a salary number yet, which says more about how new the role is than any invented figure could.
